Last Of The Singing Halakkis

Last Of The Singing Halakkis

A tale of four tribal women from Karnataka, who have changed the face of their community through their poems & singing.

Story & Words by Yashas Mitta
Photography by Madhumita Nandi

We spent a week documenting and living with The Halakki women in Ankola, a hamlet in the northern part of Karnataka, India.

Over those seven days, we were moved and inspired by the women who have risen beyond their challenges and through their music and poetry, have not only entertained, but have changed local laws for the better and have represented their community on an national stages. And more importantly, have celebrated their authenticity and uniqueness unapologetically.

We wanted to tell their story in the way we experienced it, through audio, video and photography paired with a deserving long form.
